Study Uncovers Sex Appeal of Dark Personalities
Recent study suggest that people high in some dark personality traits, such as narcissism and psychopathy, can be more physically attractive than others.
Even though most people don’t consider narcissism or psychopathy desirable characteristics in people, many of us are surprisingly attracted toward people with these personality traits.
A new research led by Nicholas Holtzman and Michael Strube at Washington University in St. Louis discovered that people traits known as the “Dark Triad” (narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy), are associated with a better ability to effectively enhance one’s physical appearance.
The study involved 111 college students (64 percent women), who were photographed in their regular daily attire. Then each participant were asked to put on a pair of gray sweatpants and a t-shirt. Women were instructed to wash off any makeup, and anyone with long hair was asked to pull it back into a ponytail. The students were photographed again. The researchers showed both sets of photographs to a group of strangers who ranked them in terms of physical attractiveness. By comparing the attractiveness ratings of before and after images, the researchers were able to determine how much each participant was able to make themselves more appealing through clothes, or makeup.
Next Nicholas Holtzman and Michael Strube evaluated the students’ personalities and their tendencies towards narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism. They asked the students to rate themselves and to provide emails for a few of their friends so that they could ask them to present ratings as well. Each student’s self-assessment and peer-assessment were combined to create a composite personality score. Furthermore, the students’ ratings on narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism were combined into create a composite “dark triad” score.
Researchers found that people with dark personalities seem to be better at making themselves physically appealing.
However, people with these traits are not seen as more physically attractive than others when you take away their freedom to wear their own clothes and makeup.
This study provides the first experimental evidence that dark personalities actively create positive first impressions.
There is no doubt that Holtzman and Strube found the reason why it may be important to take your time in creating judgments when you get to know someone.
